There’s something fishy going on with lobster populations in the Northeast. Regardless of the extent to which climate change is impacting these populations, the fact of the matter is that the industry is shifting and forcing many to adapt. Maintaining sustainable fisheries requires working relationships among fishermen, scientists, and local businesses to enhance education and research. Such collaborative efforts are leading to prudent regulations and conservation practices, more efficient technologies, along with new fishing techniques such as a diversified catch. Last summer, while in Maine and Rhode Island, we met with scientists working to better understand this phenomenon and the fishermen that are living it. We even spent a day on the water with fishermen in RI who are diversifying their catch with tasty Jonah crabs.
