The gestalt Gardener
"If dead people can grow it, I can grow it,” says The Gestalt Gardener, Felder Rushing, referring to his visits at local cemeteries to find native plant species that will grow well in his garden. It’s hard to miss his home/experimental garden in Fondren, Mississippi, which embodies his self-proclaimed town saying, “Keep Fondren Funky.” With each new plant or shrub he adds, Felder is shifting the paradigm for what a suburban yard should look like. Rather than heavily fertilized, manicured lawns, he advocates a style of “lazy” gardening/landscape that promotes an abundance of native plants that thrive in your local environment without much maintenance.
You can catch Felder cracking jokes and sharing his wisdom on NPR’s Mississippi’s Public Broadcasting show “Think Radio.” (https://www.npr.org/podcasts/48607553...) Or, check out his website to see his latest work: https://www.felderrushing.net/
