Cranberry growers are having trouble due to Climate Impacts on the Massachusetts Cranberry Industry…

In Southeastern Massachusetts, April means cranberry vines are coming out of dormancy. As farmers begin prepping for the growing season, they will be carefully monitoring for frost among many other things that spell trouble for this dinner table delicacy. Last fall we attended the 15th annual A.D. Makepeace Cranberry Harvest Celebration, which may have been the last. Growers are having trouble combating many issues facing the crop due to climate change, including more intense rain falls, unpredictable frost seasons, and difficulties with insects. We met with researchers at the Umass Cranberry Station to discuss what growers and researchers are doing to overcome these challenges.
